I’m a little late in the new (Axiom was out on may 14th & HoL was out on the 26) But I though I should do a follow up on those game since I’ve wrote about it in the past

Axiom Verge

I’ve did a quick post on Axiom Verge back in 2012, I didn’t had much info at the time except that it’s looks like Billy from “Contrat” knocked up Samus from “Metroid” and 2 years later we have “Axiom Verge”. The game look amazing and if you a fan of one of the classic plateformer you will love that one.

“Combat bizarre biomechanoid constructs, the deadly fallout of an ancient war, and the demons of your own psyche. And finally, break the game itself by using glitches to corrupt foes and solve puzzles in the environment. Life. Afterlife. Real. Virtual. Dream. Nightmare. It’s a thin line. It’s Axiom Verge.”

Heroes of Loot

Another game I’ve talked in the past albeit more recently. Back in January 2014, Heroes of loot was released on mobile device and had the great pleasure to play the free version on my phone. Heroes of loot is a dungeon crawler that look a lot like like the classic Gauntlet. Even the heroes are the same, the good old tank warrior, the wizard, the sexy Valkyrie and the long range elvish Archer (or Ranger) but you can unlock new characters by playing.

If beating up monster to death in a endless dungeon is your thing, Heroes of Loot should hit the mark for you.

Aerannis

Developer ektomarch started a Kickstarter campaign for Metroidvania style game called Aerannis.

Aerannis

In Aerannis, the protagonist a female assassin that lives in the last city on earth. The game will be set in an open ended world that you can explore freely, you advance by doing mission. Also the game has a stealth element where you hide to either take hostage, run behind a guard etc.

Aerannis

They managed to hit the initial goal but there still are some stretch goals that are left and there is currently only 13 days left to the campaign.

If you want to support this game and get some of the rewards go to the kickstarter page.

The Ruins of Old Earth

If you liked the initial Metroid you will like this dark, moody pixelated atmosphere that will makes you remember the first Metroid game. The ruins of old earth take place well we don’t know yet, it seems that you are in an undiscovered region of Earth and you have to explore that harsh & wild region of the underground of Earth. Our hero can have a jetpack (not sure if he actually start with it), and three type of gun (beam, pulse, lazer) .

The Ruins of Old Earth

The ruin of old earth is a ongoing project, you can check where there at in theirs forum:

The ruin of old earth (Indie games)

Today two side-scroller on PC that are pretty cool, review say that they are Metroid like but I don’t see it.

Spud’s Quest

Spud’s Quest mixes up the puzzle and platform sequences quite well: some require speaking to people, others are Sokoban-like (pushing boxes and other items), and several require finding and dropping the necessary item somewhere specific to advance. Some areas require gaining new abilities to progress, as well, a trope Metroid fans should be all too familiar with. Enemies aren’t annoyingly tough, and you have unlimited, short-ranged ammo to dispose of them.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City

As an action platformer with a heavy dose of exploration, Valdis Story does this aspect of its job well. There are plenty of enemies to dismantle and treasure chests to unlock throughout the levels, so progression tends to move at a decent and engaging pace. The normal enemies don’t pose too much of a threat. You’ll have to pay attention while fighting groups, but single foes are dispatched easily enough. These fights are best used to learn the ins and outs of combat, how to use the dash mechanic, and discover the uses of your magic spells.
